This morning I was sitting listening to Mike Z. (Journeyman) at RU Awake in Starbucks... We were discussing how God has a tendency to move us from time to time off of center or to knock us off kilter, so to speak. I mean, we all get comfortable with where our lives are at. We get to a comfortable place domestically, spiritually, financially, emotionally, and in every other facet of life. Well, I know that I do!
It seems like just as we get to that place God has to come along and do something to remind us that we are completely dependent upon him. He has to mess up our equilibrium (or, should I say, "Fix our equilibrium"?) so that we come back to the place of relying on Him for EVERYTHING! It is so easy to get comfortable in the comforts that God has provided to us and forget that He is the one who has provided them... ALL OF THEM! Our health, our wealth, our peace, our families... EVERYTHING!
I am a S.C.U.B.A. diver so I know what it is to have my equilibrium not be right. Maybe it was a deep water dive, and I never quite got the pressure adjusted in my ears on the descent... When I come back to the surface my equilibrium is going to be shot for some time! I mean, in my head I know that I am standing on firm footing, I know the world isn't rocking to and fro, but because my equilibrium is messed up my heart just won't buy into what my "head" is telling it!
Are you there in your spiritual life? Have you ever been there? God has brought some things into your life to bring you back to a realization that you MUST have the Comforter, but your faith is now shaken?! Your "head" knows that God only does what is best for us and for His good pleasure. In your mind you know that God is a firm foundation, but your heart is fooling you into questioning your foundation and footing with God... You are experiencing "Spiritual Vertigo"! Romans 8:29 says, "And we know that ALL things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." Remember the words of Jeremiah from Jeremiah 17:9, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?".
The cure for "Spiritual Vertigo" is the Word and Promises of God. God, His Word, and His Son are the Sure Foundations. Though we may not understand what God is doing in our life at the particular moment we do know beyond a shadow of a doubt that it is according to His will and plan, and that it is for our good!
